UPS announced earlier this month that it expanded four distribution centers by a total of 1.2 million square feet this year.
The centers are located in Mira Loma, California; Hebron, Kentucky; Louisville, Kentucky; and Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Alan Amling, the package carrier’s VP of global logistics, said the expansion projects are in anticipation of an increase in demand.
“Demand variability is a fact of life for most of our customers,” Amling told Logistics Management. “These expansions are a visible sign UPS is prepared to flexibly grow with our customers for the long term. Both Mira Loma and Hebron are campus locations providing additinoal labor and space flexibility for growing customers. The Toronto and Louisville facilities are close to other campus locations and all the facilities have UPS air hubs nearby to allow for later order cutoff times.”
The biggest expansion was at UPS’s Louisville center, which added 606,000 square feet with a new building. That facility is just 20 minutes away from UPS’s flagship Worldport location, which serves as the single largest fully automated package handling facility in the world. The expansion brings the total size of UPS space in the Louisville region to 4.4 million square feet.
