A recently published safety and health injury prevention sheet by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises shipyard employers on how to better protect workers from rigging hazards.
Rigging operations involve securing the different parts of a ship and preparing them for lifting using material handling equipment. Shipyard workers are exposed to occupational hazards such as physical injuries, falls, electric shocks and even death if rigging operations are not done properly.
“Far too many workers in shipyard employment have suffered severe injuries or have died from preventable hazards,” Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels said in an official statement. “Employers who follow the guidance provided in this injury prevention sheet will create a safer, more healthful work environment for their workers.”
