When used correctly, scissors lifts can improve operational efficiency, help maintain optimal ergonomic conditions for workers, and increase productivity. In order to maximize your use of a scissors lift in your materials handling operation, there are a number of considerations to take into account before ordering and installing your unit.
Capacity — Each scissors lift is designed to functionally lift a specialized weight, known as its lift capacity. When selecting a scissors lift, make sure to include both the weight of the live load (the items that will placed on the scissors lift) as well as the dead load (permanent equipment such as weight scales, conveyors or fixtures). Scissors lifts that are overcapacitized eventually may fail or function improperly.
Nature of the Load — What types of materials will the scissors lift be used for most commonly? In some instances, the center of gravity of the load in relation to the center of the scissors lift’s supporting leg structure will be imbalanced. Off centered loads may put more stress on the structure, so special accommodations may be required.
Means of Loading and Unloading — How loads will be move onto and off of the scissors lift can influence the type of lift you need. Some lifts are rated for maximum capacity when the scissors legs are in the lowered position, but may fail if the same weight is rolled onto the platform when the legs are fully extended. In this instance, special support structures to reinforce the scissors lift may be required.
Load Footprint — The footprint of the load in relation to the platform can play an important role in the proper function of the scissors lift. If the load is larger than the platform and hangs over the sides, it may cause the scissors lift to tip. In this instance, a larger platform may be required.
Speed Requirements — How fast the lift can be extended and retracted can impact its efficiency. Although most scissors lifts use a standard speed, in some cases faster speeds are required, such as in the case of facilitating an assembly line.
Choosing the right scissors lift for your applications requires considering all of these safety issues, as well as providing adequate training for any employees who are going to be operating the equipment, along with their supervisors.
